Bitcoin Cash update

07 Aug, 2017 1 min read 9388

We would like to give our customers an update on our plans for Bitcoin Cash. You can read about Bitcoin Cash in our previous few blog entries.

Customers who had bitcoin in their CoinTree account at the time of the Bitcoin Cash fork, we intend to allow a once off withdrawal of your Bitcoin Cash balance by the end of the year. Meanwhile, customers can use their accounts as normal; all account actions such as making purchases or sending bitcoin leave the Bitcoin Cash balance unaffected.

We are also happy to announce that Bitcoin Cash has now been added to our ever-growing list of altcoins. All customers can swap bitcoin for Bitcoin Cash and 40+ altcoins.

Normal service restored

We're pleased to announce the bitcoin network remains stable after the recent split. Our service has returned to normal.

We will continue to monitor Bitcoin Cash over the coming weeks. At this stage CoinTree has no plans to officially support Bitcoin Cash in the same capacity as we do with Bitcoin. We will post any developments on our blog.

Network disruption update

31 Jul, 2017 2 min read 6180

This is a short update to the previous blog entry about the possible network disruption. Please read and understand it before continuing.

We have been advised that all of our global partners are halting trading during the upcoming network disruption. As a result purchases, sells, bill payments and altcoin swaps will be unavailable at times. We hope to minimise downtime as much as possible and will post updates on our Twitter feed.

Purchases are typically a two step process (deposit and processing) and warrant special mention. At all times, customers will be able to begin a new purchase and make a deposit. If we have a partner operational at the time of receiving your deposit, we will process the purchase immediately as per usual. Any purchase deposits we receive during the downtime will be applied as account credit, allowing customers to purchase bitcoin or withdraw it back to your bank account at a time that suits you. As a reminder to customers, CoinTree does not lock in prices and searches for the best price globally at the time of processing each deposit. During this time of uncertainty, we recommend waiting for the network to settle if you are worried about price fluctuations.

At this stage we anticipate customers will still be able to send bitcoin from their accounts during the network disruption.

Twitter will be our primary source of updates during this time. The url is https://twitter.com/CoinTreeAus

Potential network disruption

27 Jul, 2017 5 min read 6627

Around 1st August 2017, the bitcoin network may experience disruption due to a situation where a split may occur. This will create multiple versions of bitcoin going forward.

This is the first time in bitcoin’s history that an intentional split is likely to occur. Some services are opting to halt trading during the event. As one of the only exchanges to store each customer's bitcoin in their own bitcoin wallet, the risk to CoinTree and our customers is considerably reduced. CoinTree intends to remain operational during this event, subject to our suppliers and partners being operational as well.

One of the risks during the event is that the network may ‘re-organise’, causing previously confirmed bitcoin transfers to become unconfirmed. As a precaution, CoinTree will increase the minimum confirmations required for deposits from two (2) to at least ten (10) confirmations. This will result in a respective delay with purchases as purchased bitcoin is sent to customer accounts rather than being account credit. The minimum confirmations will be restored to two (2) once the event is over.

The planned split will create a coin called Bitcoin Cash. At this stage, CoinTree has no plans to support this coin on the same level as bitcoin (BTC). Bitcoin Cash will likely be added to our list of 40+ altcoins that can be purchased, instead of being added to our Buy Bitcoin page.

For customers with bitcoin in their accounts when the split occurs, CoinTree cannot guarantee that your account balance will receive Bitcoin Cash. Once the bitcoin network resumes normal operation, CoinTree will evaluate the best course of action for customers. If CoinTree decides to support the Bitcoin Cash split, it will take time to implement a solution. CoinTree customers who would like to ensure they receive Bitcoin Cash as a result from the split are advised to withdraw their bitcoin from CoinTree before 31 July 2017.

Important updates on this event will be posted on our twitter and our blog.

Read more about the split and Bitcoin Cash at https://news.bitcoin.com/what-every-bitcoiner-should-know-about-bitcoin-cash

Questions you may be wondering...

Q. Can I lose my bitcoin?

A. Whether you have bitcoin on CoinTree or elsewhere, your bitcoin will be safe during the split. The split will create a new coin called Bitcoin Cash. Existing bitcoin remains untouched.

Q. Which wallet should I send my existing bitcoin to so that I receive Bitcoin Cash when the split occurs?

A. CoinTree hasn’t evaluated the status of other bitcoin wallets. Please do your due diligence when picking a wallet to use. If you own a hardware wallet such as a Trezor or Ledger Nano, they have announced support for Bitcoin Cash. Please read their documentation prior to sending your bitcoin and ensure you understand how they will handle the split.

Q. What will happen if I send bitcoin from CoinTree before the split?

A. Bitcoin sent before the split will be normal bitcoin. Once the split occurs, you will have access to bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash if the service you sent it to supports it.

Q. What will happen if I send bitcoin from CoinTree after the split?

A. The service you send bitcoin to will only see bitcoin and not Bitcoin Cash. If CoinTree decides to support the Bitcoin Cash split, you will later be able to send Bitcoin Cash from your CoinTree account. CoinTree does not guarantee the split will be supported, nor is there an ETA at this stage.

Q. Can I buy bitcoin before and during the split?

A. Yes, purchases will remain available and working as per usual before, during and after the split. The only expected impact is that the number of confirmations required for account actions will be increased during the split from two (2) to at least ten (10). This will increase the time it takes for bitcoin purchases to complete. Although the completion time will be longer than usual, you will receive the same amount of bitcoin as prices are locked in when they are first processed.

Q. What will happen if I buy bitcoin from CoinTree after the split?

A. You will receive bitcoin only and not Bitcoin Cash. The Buy Altcoins page will likely have Bitcoin Cash available for purchase for those who want to acquire it after the split occurs.

Q. What will happen if I start a purchase pre-split but don't pay until after the split?

A. CoinTree processes purchases at the time of receiving payments. If a payment is received and processed after the split, you will receive bitcoin only and not Bitcoin Cash, even if the purchase was created pre-split.

Q. What will happen to the price of bitcoin?

A. In short, no one knows. There’s a lot of speculation and opportunists looking to capitalise on the uncertainty. During time like these we would like to remind everyone not to panic buy or panic sell. Set your position now and stick to it.

Q. What about other potential forks such as UASF?

A. The reason our statement is out today is so that CoinTree could take the necessary time to evaluate the likelihood of each potential fork activating. With segwit2x locked in during the previous weekend, the chances of other forks occurring have greatly reduced. CoinTree will continue to monitor the situation and will provide an update if anything changes.

If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact our friendly support team.

Sells and bill payments temporarily unavailable

12 Jun, 2017 1 min read 3832

Our goal at CoinTree is to make bitcoin accessible for the everyday person. As such, for the last four years we have paid the bitcoin's miners fees for our customers, allowing people to focus on using bitcoin instead of the complexities of it.

Over the last six months, bitcoin's network fees have risen substantially, increasing from a few cents to now costing over $5 per transaction. Unfortunately, it is no longer sustainable for CoinTree to pay these fees for our customers in their current state. While we put our thinking caps on to determine what is the best course of action for our customers, Bitcoin Sells and Paying Bills With Bitcoin are temporarily unavailable. There is no ETA at this stage as we want to take time to find a solution that lives up to the easy-to-use level of service that CoinTree is known for. Stay tuned.

Send bitcoin updates

04 Jun, 2017 1 min read 8829

Today we are releasing improvements to the Send Bitcoin page.

  • Improved fee calculations to ensure a timely transfer on the bitcoin network. Recently, bitcoin's fees have increased and these changes should help your transfers confirm on the bitcoin network just as quick as usual.

  • Altered how the economy fee option works. Previously, economy sends would be batched and broadcast at an appropriate time when the bitcoin network is quiet. However the bitcoin network has been seeing fewer predictable quiet times recently, so we have opted to immediately broadcast your transfers at a reduced fee. We will be monitoring this over the next few weeks to ensure transfers meet the right balance of cheap network fees and quick confirmation times. Please note, bitcoin network fees are not a CoinTree fee.

  • Added an button to quickly send your whole bitcoin balance, saving having to manually calculate it.

We hope you enjoy these updates.

Pricing update

28 May, 2017 1 min read 7437

We are experiencing unprecedented demand for our services. To keep up with demand we have had to make some changes to our back end processes leading to extra costs. As such we have increased our service charge from 2 to 3% and minimum purchases from $10 to $200. This is a short term situation and we plan on restructuring our fees in the new financial year to continue to provide the best price for bitcoin in Australia. Thank you for your understanding and we plan to have more updates soon.

Today we're happy to announce that Ripple and Potcoin have been added to our ever growing pool of altcoins.

Ripple, seen as a complement to bitcoin rather than a competitor, has been around for years and gained popularity in the crypto-currency space. It's been designed to allow seamless transfer of any form of currency, whether it be dollars, pounds, euros, yen or bitcoin.

Potcoin is one of the most specialised altcoins we've come across. According to Wikipedia, its aim is to become the standard form of payment for the legalised cannabis industry overseas.

A year in review

31 Dec, 2016 3 min read 5904

Season's greetings from everyone at CoinTree.

It's been a wonderful and eventful year for us here at CoinTree and for bitcoin across the globe. In international news, we've seen many governments begin to take bitcoin and its blockchain technology seriously. We've seen a major overseas exchange, Bitfinex, lose USD $65 million in bitcoin and survive in an extraordinary turn of events. And the bitcoin community experienced the first real bitcoin halving since general adoption.

Closer to home, Australia is continuing to embrace blockchain technology. Earlier this year the government held a $22 million bitcoin auction without a hitch. More recently, Australia Post announced it is researching the blockchain for streamlining its processes, and the BAA released a guide showing merchants how easy it is to accept bitcoin.

At CoinTree, it's not all about keeping up with the latest news. We released BitID integration (allowing you to sign in securely without touching a keyboard), altcoins (such as Zcash, Ether and Litecoin), a currency converter (for those buying for overseas purchases), streamlined purchase time frames, and added a track order feature where you can watch the progress of a purchase, just like watching a parcel arrive. All while maintaining one of the best prices here in Australia. Our best price guarantee has yet to be claimed!

As we look forward to taking a short break, we are excited for what 2017 holds. In the new year, we will see Australian bitcoin platforms start to become regulated. While it will be a lot of work for CoinTree and similar services, it is a great thing for consumers and the community. We expect to see more announcements from the government, ASX and Australia Post about their blockchain research and the progress being made. And we could see bitcoin hit an all-time new high. Fingers crossed!

Wishing you a safe and fun festive season.

Announcing auth codes

27 Nov, 2016 1 min read 2635

Today we're releasing a new feature that will help keep everyone's account more secure, auth codes.

For both new and existing users, when performing some account actions such as sending bitcoin, you will now be prompted to enter an auth code. This is a unique 6 digit code that is sent to you via email or SMS depending on what security features have been activated on your account. For users with two-factor authentication enabled, this will be the code from your authenticator app.

It's a great step forward for account security. Please contact support if you have any questions.

Ensuring fast purchases are fast

30 Oct, 2016 2 min read 1481

Last week the global bitcoin network experienced an all-time high of activity. It's great to see bitcoin usage continue to increase, but for our users, last week was a time of frustration as purchases took a long time to be approved by the network.

Our team has been working hard to ensure this doesn't happen again. Today we are rolling out a system upgrade that should see purchases continue to be delivered and confirmed as quick as usual should this type of event occur again.

The focus on the system upgrade has delayed our work to enable cash deposits again. We appreciate your patience while we work on this and plan to have it available again later this week.

In other news, Zcash is an exciting new altcoin that reached 26 BTC for 1 ZEC during its first day of launch. It's been added to our ever-growing list of altcoins. If you fancy some Zcash, the Buy Altcoin page will display a price quote once the price stabilises.

BPAY purchase option removed

20 Oct, 2016 1 min read 203

At CoinTree, we are continuously monitoring the needs of our users and working on providing the best experience possible. Recently we looked at the purchase options we provide and BPAY stuck out as an odd one. While us Aussies are very familiar with BPAY, it is essentially the same as Online Banking, and usually slower, causing frustration while you wait for your deposits to arrive. It is also our least used purchase method. So today we are announcing the removal of the BPAY option.

If you have been using BPAY and think we might have overlooked a good use case for it, please let us know.

Track your bitcoin like you track your parcels

30 Aug, 2016 5 min read 2419

Today we are proud to announce a unique feature in the bitcoin world, track orders. Whenever you buy bitcoin, you will now be able to track the bitcoin in real-time on its journey to your account. It's just like tracking a parcel, expect better!

Bitcoin purchases go through a number of stages during its journey to your CoinTree account. While the journey is pretty quick (about 20 minutes on average), it hasn't been too clear what's going on, what stage it is at, and most importantly, when will it arrive.

With our new track order feature, at any time you can get an instant update of what stage your purchase is at. Each stage contains detailed information explaining why the stage is needed, how long the stage takes, and what the remaining stages are. We have worked hard to provide as much information as possible. All CoinTree accounts are real bitcoin wallets, so we have also taken the opportunity to explain a few simple bitcoin terms such as confirmations.

Next time you buy bitcoin, you'll receive a Track Order link in your confirmation email. You can also find a link in your Transaction Log.

We hope you enjoy tracking your bitcoin purchases. Let us know your feedback.

Want to buy bitcoin for an overseas purchase or send bitcoin to a friend overseas? Up until now you've had to convert the currency itself to AUD. It's doable, but tedious and prone to error.

Our new Currency Converter is a one-stop-shop for finding how much bitcoin you need to fulfil an overseas purchase or transfer. Supporting major international currencies including USD, EUR and GDP, it calculates the amount of bitcoin you need to buy or send from CoinTree to meet a target amount in a chosen foreign currency.

At the moment we support a number of major foreign currencies. Please let us know if we’re missing any that you’d like added.

Introducing a faster, more secure login option

04 May, 2016 5 min read 1203

At CoinTree we strive to keep up with the latest in security and today we have launched a new way to log in to your CoinTree account, BitID login.

BitID allows you to securely log in to your account without entering your email address or password. Simply scan the QR code on our login page with a BitID-enabled mobile app and click Confirm, and the page you scanned will automatically take you to your CoinTree dashboard. It's amazing technology and you really have to see it to believe it!

The first question you might ask is 'Is BitID Safe?'

Yes, BitID is the most secure way to log into your account. With traditional email and password login, malware poses a risk of stealing your credentials (which is why we always recommend activating two-factor authentication). With BitID, this isn't possible.

The next question might be 'How Can I Try It?'

  • Download a BitID supported app such as Mycelium or Aizbitz on your mobile device.
  • Login to you CoinTree account the normal way (email and password), and go to your Security page.
  • Complete the process to set up BitID.
  • Your mobile app is now tied to your CoinTree account.

Now the exciting part! Log out and go the log in page. Scan the QR code with your mobile app. You'll be automatically logged into your account without doing anything else.

How does this work?

It seems like magic but behind the scenes the steps are straight forward. When the QR is scanned, the mobile app encrypts a unique code using the same technology that bitcoin uses. The encrypted code is sent to CoinTree where we double-check it is valid and has come from you and only you. If everything checks out, you're logged in. All of this happens almost instantly! And because it's powered by the same technology uses, it is very secure.

We encourage everyone to try this out. You don't need any bitcoin. Download a compatible mobile app (Mycelium or Airbitz for example), set up BitID login using the Security page of your account, then login by scanning the QR code. It only takes a few moments to complete everything and you'll enable more secure and quicker logins.

Please send your feedback to our friendly support team.

New verification checks

16 Jul, 2015 2 min read 416

We have recently seen a new type of fraud where the general public has been tricked into completing bitcoin purchases of scammers. To protect everyone we have introduced a new verification measure for cash deposits. Purchases will continue to be processed as soon as we receive your deposit, and now requests to send bitcoin from your account will be queued until you provide proof that you hold the receipt.

We have looked how other exchanges are handling the issue and tried to find a balance of keeping purchases quick and easy while preventing fraud and keeping our process transparent. This measure only applies to cash deposits and the Send Bitcoin page will guide you through what to do, if you need to do anything.

Our online deposit methods have been temporarily disabled while we evaluate those.
